What is Leather Tape
On the surface, the concept of leather tape may seem like an overkill. What's wrong with plain old tape? But don't tell the thousands of cyclists that they rely on leather to cover their handlebars. The leather tape on the handlebars is usually beveled for better grip, especially in wet weather, where it can stand up to years of wetness. Most leather handlebar tapes have a joint per piece, diagonal seam. It comes in a variety of colors and the surface can be embossed.
Leather tape is basically a very thin strip of leather with adhesive applied to one side. Because it is significantly more expensive than tape made from common synthetic materials, its use is largely limited to situations where durability and abrasion resistance are questionable, especially when exposed to harsh environments. It's also flexible enough that the cargo it's designed to hold has some flex.
Another increasingly widespread use of leather tape is for tape ruler clips, which are most commonly used by people in the construction industry who tend to work outside the home. Of course, leather tape, while not stiff enough to be used as an actual tape measure, is used to tie larger pieces of leather to an outer tape measure holder. The same technique can also be applied to leather wallets. Also, leather tape measures are used on saddles and are a close relative of leather cords, which have thinner hides. Of all its uses, leather is increasingly valued for its durability, aesthetics, and biodegradability. It will last longer in the same applications as traditional duct tape.
